Influential artists

Artists that inspired/influenced my ideas and way I went about communicating these emotions/feelings through text/narrative imagery were Rob Ryan, Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston(referencing book ' A Child of Books') and Ryan Tippery. I admire how the artists were able to create these unique different ways of formulating narrative and imagery through the use of text. For example Ryan utilises paper cut technique, Jeffers and Winston in their book utilise collaging elements and build visual images with the text itself and Tippery creates illustrations which convey a part of a bigger story linked to the text under it.

About the Artists

Rob Ryan

-Ryan is well known for his specialism in paper cut art where he uses the process to communicate and visualise heartfelt evocative stories e.g. some can be melancholic, amusing and poignant

-He cuts each paper cut with the finest paper and smallest scalpels which allow for his very detailed and appealing pieces.

-Works in both collage and print. Combining his papercutting skills with printmaking which allow for vibrant and captivating illustrations.

Oliver Jeffers + Sam Winston ('A Child of Books')

-Picture book about the adventures of a little girl who guides a young boy through forests of fairy tales and across mountains of make-believe, travelling together on a fantastical journey that unlocks the boy’s imagination.

-Combines dreamlike + imaginative images by Jeffers and Winston's typographical landscapes that are shaped from excerpts of children classics and lullabies

Ryan Tippery

-Tippery's work focuses on abstraction and how that can be explored through complimenting contrast and texture

-Has an interest in using art to represent mood and thought and by combining line and texture he aims to present windows into the mind. For example doing this through his sequential drawings that explore the relationship between text and imagery where in his pieces he shows fragments from an overall narrative.
